When your house is in boxes and you're dreaming of the future

We packed up this week, about half of our house.  Maybe that’s too generous; maybe it was 2/5 of out worldly goods.  I’m not sure.  I do know that I packed up literally half of my kitchen, and I still have plenty of functionality.  This gives me pause.  If I don’t need half of the stuff I have, why do I have it?  This question, of course, does not apply to my beloved pasta extruder, which I so bravely packed up and won’t see again until after August – I have that because, while not necessary to the function of my kitchen, it is necessary to my soul.

Please forgive the low-light, phone pictures.
Either way, this is the last proof I have of my wall like so.
These frames are now boxed, and my house is returning to its generic-builder-look

We packed and packed and packed.  You can see the digression in our packing and labeling skills.  The first few boxes are packed to the tops, nice and tight, with like items and then taped in 3 places and carefully labeled with both the contents and the designated unpacking room.  The last box I packed?  “Stuf”.  Not even two t’s.  Its pathetic. But we did it, poorly or no.  We packed, amid box shortages and uncertainty and “should it stay or should it go now” songs, and especially, despite feelings.

You guys.  There were so many feelings.  If you've ever moved from some place that you loved, I don’t have to explain these feelings to you.   There is most definitely a heart-ripping part of this.  We will never be totally separate from our sweet S. Carolina.  Its impossible, we've been changed too much by the place, by the people.  By the realization that BBQ can be something beautiful and not just chopped up deli meat & Sweet Baby Ray’s.  We've spent our whole married lives with SC driver’s licenses.  It’ll be 6 years by the time we pack the final final box, and my word, they've been good years.

But since this is a truthful place, a place to find and celebrate beauty, despite circumstances, I have to tell you that there were happy feelings too.  There is so much I want to do differently with our second house.  I’d be lying if I said that the timely arrival of The Nester’s new book didn't have a hand in that.  The ache is still in the leaving, but there’s a small spark of anticipation building too.  There has to be.  If I don’t look at this new step as an adventure, I’m sunk.  It is happening, regardless of my attitude, and so it only serves me to have the best attitude I can.

And so, after devouring The Nesting Place in one evening while sitting curled up with my new Delicate Fortress Creation’s reclaimed, hand-quilted Sari throw (so perfect!) and eating a little bit of a Divine Milk Chocolate bar, I've got the beginnings of a new Manifesto.

Scratch that.  Manifesto implies a cohesive, well-thought-out set of ideas that can withstand time and scrutiny.  I think that what I actually have is just a motto, albeit a long one.  Whatever.  I’m proud of it all the same (hashtag: own it).  So here’s my extra-long-motto-but-not-quite-a-manifesto, because you've earned it.

This time, I will do tings differently.
- I will not make a home for some imaginary future owners.  We are the owners, we are living our days inside these walls, and we will make them our own.
- I will take risks, and not stick to the one decorating trick I know (read: no more empty picture frames on every floor, in every room).
- I will see the value that exists in taking time and resources to build a comfortable, peaceful home.  Yes, it takes cash dollars and brain power, but having a purposeful, intentional home is worth it.
- I will be me in this home, and this home will look like mine.  I will own it, in every sense of the phrase.  No matter if people don’t understand why Christmas lights are hanging from the chandelier, no matter if I get on a first name and “how are your daughter’s grades?” basis with the Salvation Army people, no matter if I decide I don’t like something I begged for.  If it is not known to be functional, or believed (by me) to be beautiful, I won’t have it in my home.  And if it is either of those things, it will be.
- I will share my home in all of its imperfect glory, because to me, homes are merely  tools building community and keeping the chill out.  Although my house will reflect who I am, it will not be my identity.  It will be full of warmth even when the furnace breaks, it will be a source of calm to haggard souls despite the clutter that will never be totally picked up, and it will be where people know they are welcome and loved.  It will be a fabulous home.  Even if the walls have wood paneling on them (I can't abide it, I'm sorry).  Even if there is carpet in the bathrooms when we move in (that can’t stay, and for that I don’t apologize).

Those are my plans, my hopes, my ambitions for our new home, whatever it looks like.  Now that we've packed our fingers off, we’re driving half of our belongings North to be stored in my Father-in-law’s shed without telling him (because telling him gives him heartburn), and then we’re going house-hunting.  Seventeen houses in a single day, with over 100K between the cheapest and most expensive houses we’re looking at.  Because we Magagnotti’s are cheap and dreamers and like neighbors and large plots of land, and a great many other things.  Wish us luck!  Oh, and if you've got any advice, I'm all ears!

Ready Or Ready :: My Gray Nursery

My bags are packed.

The snacks are for me.
Not for Handsome.
He can get his own snacks.
I told him his job during labor is to sneak me food.
I will eat if I want to, people.
What are they gonna do, kick me out?
I'm ready to go.

It's piled here beside the door.

Can't wait for you to wake me up and say "It's time!"

(Are you following me, here?  To the tune of "leaving on a jet plane".  Everybody now!)

Aaaand... I'm done.  I'm over this.  Pregnancy was fun fine, and now let us move on to the next stage.  Hello!!  Baby!?  Anybody listening??

That's been pretty much my tune these last few days.  We hit 37 weeks a little while back, so we are full term, locked and loaded, just waiting on go.  And yet "go" doesn't seem like it will ever come.  People ask me if the baby has dropped.  I don't know.  I like to imagine it, but should the kiddo still be able to kick me in the ribs if he/she has dropped?  And then this morning, I swear, it felt like I had a gravitationally challenged child inside of me, as he/she was definitely not lower than normal, but higher.  Again, similar to trying to throw a cat into a tub of water, this kid was climbing the walls in there.

You're welcome for that mental picture.

Grown-Up Decorating

I'm a terrible decorator.  It's an actual deficiency.  Although I won't say that it's my mother's fault, it's my mother's fault.  She didn't really instill a love of decor in me, and I never thought it cultivate it myself.  So as I've had this home of my own and attempted to make it look more like an adult's abode and less like a college crash pad, it has been an uphill battle.  I've made some mistakes, although I've mostly done nothing which is attested to by the overwhelming number of bare, contractor-beige walls that characterize our home.

But two weeks ago, I went out on a limb.  I bought curtains.  Now, we had curtains already, but I disregarded the "do not machine wash" label and the blackout backing stuck to itself and ended up horrible.  We hung them back up anyhow, as some curtains are better than no curtains at all.  But I had some Christmas $$ burning a hole in my pocket, and I found a slew of great deals for World Market, including but not limited to: 10% off your order, $10 off orders of $30, and 10% cash back.  Oh, and the curtains I bought? 50% off.  Even with shipping, I paid less than 45% of the total price.  I was a bargain samurai.

And so I showed the curtains to handsome before I bought them.  And he says to me "Really?  You're going to go with a pattern?" and I defended my choice with a simple "Yes, yes I am."  To which he responded "Well, if you want to decorate this place like a preschool, that's your choice."

The pattern in question?

Oh, this just <sarcasm alert> screams "preschool", doesn't it?
Good thing I ignore most of his lies.
And so the curtains arrived and I put them up and you know what?  I don't regret them at all.  I think they're fitting in quite nicely, and in the one corner of the room, it actually looks like maybe an adult or two live here!

I mean, it's no staged-window from WM, but it works for me.  In fact, I made it work for me by frankensteining an extra curtain pannel onto either side of this window's set of curtains, because my window is just so dang big.  And the patterns don't quite match up.  And maybe that is a wee bit preschooler-ish.  But whatevs.  I'm making strides towards adulthood, I can feel it.

Off to eat my milk & cookies!

Not Nesting

My baseboards?  Still dirty.  Freezer meals?  Still just an idea on pinterest.  Learning to bake the perfect cherry pie?  Don't feel the need.  I'm pretty sure I'm not technically "nesting".  But what I have been doing is getting crap done, which I've always loved to do!
ASIDE: I have a problem with people telling me I'm nesting.  I don't know why.  I feel somehow that attributing my awesome success in the "getting crap done" department to "nesting" somehow diminishes what I was able to accomplish.  Like, "Oh, you climbed everest. But only because you're nesting."  No!  I did it because I'm a flippin' great mountain climber!  Do you know what I mean?  Does that even make any sense?  Either way.
ASIDE: I think it also has something to do with people telling me that I was nesting ever since about week 22.  NO.  You're not nesting then.  You don't "nest" until right before the baby comes.  You're getting things done.  You're prepping for the baby.  You're being responsible and not leaving stuff until the last minute.  But you're not nesting.  It's just not true.
Okay.  WHEW.  Sorry.  Apparently I have a lot to say on the topic of "Why I'm Not Nesting".  Anyhow, I am getting things done, and that makes me ever so happy.  Mostly, I'm trying to get Baby M's room finished.  I know, the baby doesn't actually need a nursery, and that he/she doesn't care what it looks like.  I think we can all agree that a nursery is for the parents, and in our case, specifically the mom.  Handsome, well, I think the nursery is making it a little more "real" for him, but he would be fine without it.  Or a couch - he doesn't need that either.  Or a table.  Chairs.  Shelves of any kind... he's sort of a minimalist that way.

Let me start off by saying that the gifts that people have given this baby, the love already poured out, is overwhelming.  While I was up in PA, I got not one, but two beautiful hand-made blankets!  One from a very good friend (which I'll show you later...), and the other from a cousin who I like very well but rarely get to see.  She apparently doesn't hold it against me that we're hardly ever in the same state, let alone the same zip, as she spent hours of her life crocheting this lovely blanket!

I'm pretty sure no two are the same, although I'd have to keep careful count and catalog them to find out for sure.
Have I mentioned that I LOVE bright colors!
And, said lovely cousin was kind enough to use cotton yarn so that it won't irritate Baby M's skin.
I can't wait to bundle him/her up in this piece of art!

Nursery Inspiration

I very nearly titled this "Baby Inspiration" and then I thought about what that phrase meant, and I I felt like I should post a bunch of pictures of cute babies, as though I was picking out attributes for my offspring.  And then I felt a bit like a mad professor.  The end.

via
Instead, it is about the nursery.  While we were on vacation this Summer, I asked Handsome if we could re-do the smallest of our bedrooms into a nursery.  And I mean totally re-do.  I asked him if we could rip the nasty awful very-bad-no-good popcorn ceiling down, if we could put up board and batten, and if we could install some new carpet.  Due mostly to the euphoria of being on vacation, he told me "sure!"
ASIDE: Ha!  I got him so good.  Ladies, you want a "yes"?  Ask while on vacation.  Something about being removed from the everyday makes anything seem possible.  A well-timed drink doesn't hurt either.
And then we came home, we built a shed, we paid for Dr.'s visits and labs and tuition and property tax... and suddenly I'm scaling down my own vision of what I wanted to do in that littlest of rooms.  D-man hasn't reneged on his promise.  He still thinks we're doing all the above, even though I'm pretty sure we're not.

A Star

We're in the not-as-cold-as-it-should-be-this-time-of-year North.  I've already done some visiting, met a baby who has been in my heart forever but actually arrived shortly after our last visit to PA.  I've taken part in some traditions.  It's been good.  Exhausting (already!) but good.

One of my favorite things already is the time I've spent with my little niece, Shwayler.  She comes to me, says she wants to sew something.  Okay.  "An ornament, please."  We do our little guessing game we do where I ask specific questions and hope that I'll be able to deal with the answers.  Questions like, "What color do you want it to be" while hoping she picks red, green, or gray, as those are the only colors I have.  "What shape do you want to make it?" knowing that I cannot, in fact, draw Dora to save my life, hoping desperately she picks something she won't be disappointed with.  "A star" is her answer.  Whew.  Safe.  There are 4 new ornaments on the tree now.  She's proud of them, and thinks I'm an amazing "sew-er" and great at wrapping presents, too.  My heart is so full.

My camera is missing.
Little hands seem to be getting grabby...

Stars are all that we need,

Fabric Informatique

In case the title didn't tip you off, this here is riveting stuff.  Definitely worth your time today.
Definitely.

So last week, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, blah blah blah.  I didn't really do the shopping thing.  Handsome was only off work on Friday, so we did our Thanksgiving that day.  My parents were in town all weekend, and while my Madre and I did pick up some new furniture (see the chair in below pictures), we did it casually and as we would on any day.  I perused some online ads, but nothing caught my fancy... until...

Joann.  She's evil.  We used to be friends, but then she kept offering me things that ended up costing me dearly... For example, this weekend, she's offering 50% off all Home Decor Fabrics.  And me, being the naive little thing that I am, thought that all home decor fabrics are created equal.  It went a little like this:

"I need some curtains.  Curtains are 'Home Decor'.  Any of this fabric must be suitable for curtains.  Done!"

Two brief days later, Mr. FedEx shows up, Duke barks, and I'm given this package:

And now, $$ poorer and not a whole lot wiser, I do have one bit of information to share with you.  All home decor fabrics are not created equal.  The fact that they're not all priced the same should have been a red flag for me, but I figured the difference in price was due to the design or something.  You know, Mourning Dove Herringbone must just be a really popular color, right?  Right??  Nope.

Goodbye November, Hello Christmas (giveaway)!

November has been good to me.  I've settled into my house, eaten copious amounts of stuffing there, and defaced my walls numerous times.  I've cut down my first tree with a chainsaw, taught my dog to hate squirrels, and entertained new and old friends.  Yes, November has been very good.

And now it's (nearly) over.

You know what I say to that?

Bring On Christmas!!

Now that it's over, I can officially look forward with anticipation for all that December will bring.  Loads of baking.  Wrapping of presents.  Hopefully more entertaining and friends, good times and baking.  Did I mention I plan to bake?  I do.

I also plan to try my darnedest to decorate my house for the season.  As we've noticed over the past few days, I'm not a rockstar in that department.  Lucky for me and Lucky for you, I've got some connections who are.  And one of those connections is my dear and lovely sistah, Mia, AKA CraftyMaiden13!  She specializes in wreaths, paintings, and decorations that usually include (and are as cute as) buttons!  And because she's so wonderful and crafty, we're giving away a Christmas decoration for your house!

A tree for me...
... and a tree for you!
The way to win is simple: Check out Mia's store, then leave a comment here on the blog, or on the facebook post, telling me what your favorite item she's got is.  Mine is the Jack-O-Lantern, actually, even though I totally missed it's chance, being that October is waaaay over.  But you can't pick that one, unless you really really mean it!  The giveaway will go until Friday, 12/2/11 at 8 PM.  I will randomly select a winner, contact said winner, and BOOM! Christmas will arrive at your doorstep!

Getting in the spirit of giving,
TFW

Best Left to Professionals

I had an idea today, during class.  I was stahving dahling, in the purely first-world sense (more on that little phrase later) when I remembered my old go-to quick meal: Pizza Rolls, pepperoni style.

And then I thought, "I have eggroll wrappers, I can buy pepperoni, I have motzarella... I could do this!"  So when I got home, I tried it.

The prep work seemed right.
The smell was good.
But I've come to realize, there's a reason some people are paid to do things.
Those people are professionals, and some things are best left to them.
Among those things, apparently, are Pizza Rolls.

In other news, I re-released my inner blind 5-year-old.  With better results this time.

Made out of old wallpaper samples

Pin-disaster

It's sort of funny, really, how one little letter can change your perspective so much.

Last night, at 11:43 PM, those walls seemed awesome to me.

Today, at 11:43 AM, those walls seem awful.

And that is why I left my walls bare.  Don't get me wrong, those kitchen shelves seem positively inspired to me, still.  But the other room, which is awkward enough in it's positioning and scale, is not something I'm going to be able to leave.  Boo.  Idea: Good.  Execution: deserved for what I've done to my walls not so good.

I just don't know what to do.

Perhaps I'll move the frames to the basement, where the blue/green/teal & brown chair will be eventually, and so the color scheme will seem appropriate.  I have a single small wall down there that could hold all of the excitement I tried to spread on 3 large walls upstairs.

But then, how do I make it feel like Christmas down there, with aqua and teal fighting for attention?  Is this just a bad time of year to introduce non-festive colors?  And don't tell me to decorate for Christmas with Blue.

Blasphemy.

Here is my inspiration.  I know I need... more.  More frames, more things-that-are-not-frames... just more.  Please feel free to ply me with suggestions.

No Longer Frozen

ASIDE: Do you know what I just thought??  Of course you don't.  What I just thought is that I should have put up a picture, on thanksgiving, of the turkey straight out of the oven.  That would be the entire post, and the title??

BOOM.  Roasted.

Wouldn't that have been perfect?!? *sigh*  Is it a bad sign I started with an aside?  I surely hope not.

Our house, you know, we're newly moved in and all that jazz?  At least I keep telling myself that we're still "newly" moved in, although I'm not sure how long I can keep milking it.  ANYhow, the house was remodeled before we moved in, and the contractor chose the bold color scheme of beige on beige with beige accents.  And now that I think of it, there's probably some highlights of beige in there somewhere.

It's a statement maker, that's for sure. ~dripping with sarcasm~

Anyhow, I've got these large walls, all painted and beige and, well... empty.

That emptiness of the walls had left me frozen.  Sort of like the first page of a diary - too much pressure.

ASIDE: I always skip the first page of a new journal and start on the second which somehow, although it's still the first page with writing, is totally devoid of pressure and importance.  In my opinion.

Well, my Madre and S-Padre were  in town, and S-Padre is a real do-er.  Last time he came down and I didn't have work for him to do, he went insane in the brain.  This time, I had a whole list, like getting the bathroom doors to shut (check) and ridding my house of devil-squirrels (maybe check?).  Something about all of his "do-ing" has unfrozen me, and might have unleashed a monster.

This is my favorite frame, so I didn't paint it.
